Finding a Sex Work Positive Doctor
First things first... If you are uncomforatable talking with
your doctor about your sex work related health needs - find a
new one or consider having a secondary doctor. It is important
to feel you can be open and have your needs seen to. Here are
some pointers on finding a new doctor:
-
find a sexual health clinic in
your area (see links
section or search the net)
- call and ask the doctor to call you back - When the doctor does
call, ask straight out, "Are you a sex positive practitioner?
I'd like to speak with you honestly about issues that might possibly
be health related and that are effecting my sex life. Is that
something you are willing to address with me?"
- Then go as far as saying "I am a sex worker are you comforatable
being my health practitioner?"
- Get out your phone book or (US) HMO/insurance listing and highlight
the doctors that are available to you.
- If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered (GLBT) you
may want to seek out a doctor or clinic that openly caters to
marginalized individuals. GLBT clinics often employ doctors who
are sexually sophisticated and open to individuals who live alternative
lifestyles like sex workers, people who practice BDSM, people
who have lots of tattoos or body piercings, etc…
How often Do I get Tested?
The porn industry tests their performers once a month. Consider
this a standard - this is how long many STI's take to root in the
body. HIV/AIDs takes 3-6 months.
