Safety Tips for Street Workers

Written by Wendy Babcock

  1. Try to wear clothing that you don't have to take off to fuck. This is good if you have to leave in a hurry or if you have to run away.
  2. Wear shoes that you can run in.
  3. Make sure you can see, if you have contacts or glasses WEAR THEM!
  4. Don't wear necklaces, hand bags, or scarves as these could be used to choke you.
  5. Be Alert. Try not to work while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol.
  6. Carry something that can be used as a weapon like hair spray, (for the eyes), or keys.
  7. Make sure that you have enough condoms and lube for the night.
  8. Run AGAINST traffic, not with it.
  9. Have a friend know where you are going, provide them with as much information as you can like: a phone number, license plate number, full name, where you are going etc.
  10. If youdon't have a friend around, make the client thtk taht youdo by saying to the nearest passer-by that you will meet them later at a place nearby.
  11. Let the clienty know that you told someone where you will be (even if you didn't).
  12. Pick a hotel or parking lot that you feel safe in.
  13. Stash keys, money, ID, and other important stuff where they will be safe. Keeping them in your pocket or handbag makes them more accessible if a client tries to rob you.
  14. Cautiously approach a clients car, leaving enough distance between you and the car to avoid being grabbled.
  15. Arrange price, location and service outside of the car.
  16. Walk around the car to look in it to ensure that the deriver is alone and that nobody is hiding.
  17. Once in the car, make sure that you can easily open the car door and that the handle is working.
  18. Get your money upfront and stash it somewhere (other than where you usually put it), where the client can see. This way if he does rob you, he won't get all your money.
  19. Put your purse where you can find it without looking (ie. on the floor between your feet).
  20. ALWAYS keep your eyes and ears on him and especially his hands.
  21. If he doesn't mind, keep the car door slightly open.
  22. If you are being attacked MAKE NOISE! Scream, yell, whatever, just make a commotion. Somebody might hear you and help you.
  23. If you are going to a hotel or his place, make sure that once you are in, that you check all of the rooms (including the bathroom), to ensure that nobody is hiding.
  24. Make sure that the clients door does not have a dead bolt on it.
  25. While in the clients space checkto see if there is an altenative exit other than the door you came in.
  26. If you have had a bad date please report it to your local Bad Date Line, so the information on the assailant can be passed on to other sex workers.
  27. If you have never taken a self defence course, now would be the best time to start.
  28. Remember to always trust your gut.

Safety Tips

SIZE UP THE SITUATION

  • Listen to his voice, observe body language. Listen to your instinct, if it doesn't feel right, there's a good chance it isn't.
  • Make sure the client is alone. Getting into a car with more than one person, increases your risks Check behind the back seat to make sure that no one is hiding.
  • Check the car. Always check door handles before you get in to make sure they work. Make sure you know how to unlock the door before entering car. Avoid vans.
  • Get the money first.
  • Check address. If client says he's taking you to one place, but pulls up at another, this may not be all he's lying about. Unless it's a regular, avoid bridges and tunnels.

USE A BUDDY SYSTEM:

  • Have a friend or co-worker write down the license plate number of the car before you drive off in it. Do the same when someone else goes off with a client.
  • If no one you know is around, ACT AS IF! Call to the nearest passerby something in the vein of "See you at such and such, at such and such time". Anything to let client know that you will be missed and have been witnessed leaving with them.
  • Talking into cell phone, even if not operating, can lend to the impression that you are 'connected'.
  • If working from a regular spot, make sure someone sees you both go in, so they can make sure you both come out.

Bad Date:

  • Share information with your co-workers. If you have had a bad experience with a client pass their details on to co-workers. Describe the car, his rap, anything that will help others avoid going off with him.
  • Share information with us at the needle exchange, so that we can put a 'Creep Sheet' out on him, so that we can inform others.
  • Consider reporting incident to the police. Some police are sympathetic and will do all they can to help get this person off the streets and prevent them from harming someone else. Remember: an assault is an assault, whether you live in the White House or you don't even have a house.

HEALTH

  • Try to use a latex/polyurethane condom for each sexual act, to prevent STDs and HIV. For oral sex try a non-lubricated or flavored condom.
  • Vaginal/anal sex, use a lubricated condom, and as much lube as possible, to reduce "trauma and abrasions", which means harm to your vagina. Its especially important to protect yourself from secondary/re-infection with HIV if you are immune compromised from HIV or Hepatitis C. Obviously, condoms also prevent pregnancy!
  • If you are really high or really sick, you may find yourself agreeing to do things you normally wouldn't when you negotiate terms with a client. Try to get straight before your date.
  • Do not carry weapons
  • Use your voice and speed (scream, honk horn)
  • Attack areas that are vulnerable (eyes, throat, testacles)
  • Run away against lights, towards car lights and people

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

  • Wear shoes that you can run in.
  • Necklaces, scarves, key chains, anything around neck is dangerous (it can be used to strangle or drag you).
  • Hygiene. If at all possible, try to wash between dates. If water is not available, non-alcohol towelettes are good.
  • Get yourself checked as often as possible (At least every six months) If you need help accessing GYN care, contact your local needle exchange. More and more programs are working with working women!

TAKING CHARGE

  • You are the paid professional: take charge of the situation!
  • For example, you are less vulnerable if you are on top.
  • Get the money first, and again listen to you heart and instincts.
