Editing/Formatting a Wikki Document

The first character entered on a line often controls the formatting of the text on that line (shades of Fortran), in brief (see below and sub pages for details). Expanded list These are the basics:

Section Headings

  • = Section Heading 1 =
  • == Section Heading 2 ==
  • === Section Heading Three ===
  • ==== Section Heading Four ====
  • ===== Section Heading 5 =====
  • ====== Section Heading 6 ======

Lists, Tables and Spacing=

  • ":" colon causes text to be indented
  • "=" equals - followed by a space - creates a heading, a trailing "=" - preceded by a space - is required
  • "*" asterisk creates a bulleted list
  • "#" hash creates a numbered list
  • ";" semicolon creates a definition list, a ":" colon is required subsequently on the same line
  • "----" four hyphens creates a horizontal line
  • "||" vertical bar creates a table
  • " " space causes text to appear in a monospaced font where spaces are significant


Text Formatting

  1. Two quotes together ' ' make things italic
  2. Three quotes together ' ' ' make things bold
  3. Four or more quotes give bold italic


Indented :/ Bulleted */ Numbered # Text:

  1.  : Text to be indented (quote-block)
  2.  :: Text indented more
  3.  ::: Text indented to third level


Paragraphs

  • A single blank line separates paragraphs
  • A single line containing 4 or more dashes (-) makes a page break
  • > indents
  • > > indents more


References

  1. You can refer to another page by putting its name in double square brackets like this: [ [PAGE] ] (do not include spaces between the brackets)
  2. URLs will be automatically recognized and underlined: http://your.site/contents.html
  3. If you put URL's in square brackets, they'll be shown as a tiny reference [1] [1] instead, or as inline images if they have the extension .gif or .jpg
  4. If you put URL's in square brackets - and place a space then text inside the bracket - the link will have a title [url title] title/description of URL
